Ian Holm |
Veteran British actor Ian Holm has died at the age of 88. He was loved by the public like Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Chariots of Fire and first reached a wide audience in Alien. His agent, Alex Irwin, told NPR that his death on Friday was linked to Parkinson's disease.
Ian Holm can play everyone from King Lear to android to hobbit. NPR's All Things Consured in 2002 said he was less interested in fame than a good actor.
"It's so much better than being an unquoted movie star, because I think I'll find walking down the street and making people yell at you, yelling at you, clapping you on the back or whatever's unbearable." "
Born outside London in 1931, Ian Holm joined the Royal Shakespeare Company when it was founded three decades later and celebrated on stage. His portrayal of Lenny at harold pinter's The Homecoming premiere won him a Tony Award after being moved from the West End to Broadway. But he suffered a severe state of horror in 1976, during the performance of The Iceman Cometh, and largely turned to film and television afterwards. He hasn't been back on stage for nearly two decades.
Then, in the mid-1940s, he became known to the film's audience, starting with his role in Alien as Android Ash. Since then, he has often alternated between appearing in hollywood major box office movies and more gay films, including Terry Gilliam Brazil and Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter.
In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award, his role as athletics coach Sam Mousabini in "Chariots of Fire"won a special award at the Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA Award.
He was appointed cbe in 1997 and was named Queen Elizabeth II a year later.
